With an international profile that has seen him work with leading fashion photographers including Patrick Demarchelier, Robert Erdman and Richard Bailey, Kevin Murphy has created styles for every magazine that I love. I recently had the incredible opportunity to meet with this excellent man, who just so happens to be one of the most sought after hair stylists in the world.
Kevin has a lengthy client list that boasts celebs like Elle McPherson, Cate Blanchett, Naomi Watts and Miranda Kerr (just to name a few!) and his internationally acclaimed brand includes a successful range of luxury hair products. Needless to say, I was super excited to interview the man that Vogue said was the man who invented the iconic “beach hair” look!
LK. What are your expert tips on how to keep hair healthy?
KM. That’s easy! Treatment, treatment, treatment! Unlike your skin, which can rejuvenate itself, your hair needs constant feeding. This is especially true if you colour your hair or use heat tools because these things take it out of your hair. Our treatment product, ‘Young Again’ is an excellent product to use for those girls who need a quick-fix treatment that works.

KM. A lot of people have said to me that they don’t know what is in fashion because suddenly everything is!
We see a curious mix of 40s-50s-60s-70s… A serious mishmash of trends. So, what you are going to do is your going to use say… 70s eye makeup with 40s hair or 60s dresses with a French roll, so you’ve got that 60s shift with a sort of Mondrian shape.. But then you would add High Definition colour. The dominant look is a bit more ladylike but not too ‘proper’ you’ve got to add pink ends! It is all about the juxtaposition. Anything nostalgic is IN as well as anything that is beautiful (duh) but then you have to have a punk element thrown in.
LK. Many of our readers want to know, what are your tips on the best way to create GLAM hair at home?
KM. Yea that is a tricky one because it is such a high maintenance look. But the best way to get the GLAM is with rollers and curling iron. I have a podcast called the ‘Screen Siren’ that goes through this process step by step. Also, we do a kit called the ‘Screen Siren kit’ that has all the bits and bobs in there to help you get this look.
It is much easier to show people than tell them because there are quite a few steps. Visuals are best!
Tips from the top:
1: Spray underneath the hair it really gives that extra bounce.
2: Use a curling iron that it smaller than the roller what that does is it confuses the hair into thinking its curly so then you wrap around a large roller, and you get those big waves.
3: Don’t curl anything above the tip of your ear. Curley fringes are not cute!
4: Don’t try and do it too perfectly, keep it loose.
5: It’s the cooling down that sets the hair so take your time towards the end.
LK. As it is coming into festival/camping season, with R&V and summer road trips what are the best products to use in order keep your hair from looking like you just spent the night in the bush?
KM. The only product you are going to need this festival season is Dry Shampoo! You’ve got nowhere to wash your hair, but you don’t want to look like you’ve been pulled through a bush backwards. The tools I would recommend would be Dry Shampoo and a wide tooth comb. The comb will work to keep the natural texture of your summer hair yet make it look presentable. Nobody wants to look like they have been dragged through a bush backwards!
The Dry Shampoo rules are:
1: Hair-line part-line: Spray only where the hair is oily and then just rub the product through.
2: Use a towel to soak up the rest of the residue in brown hair, just rub it around the hairline/part-line.
