Sketchers to pay for false claims charges against Shape-Ups

Sketchers USA will have to pay a $40 million (US) settlement because the claims they made that their Shape-Up sneakers will shape-you-up were, well, FALSE.

Gasp! They completely pulled the wool over our eyes. How could walking around in slanted soled shoes NOT help us to lose weight? They even had Kim Kardashian promoting their benefits!

The completely  false claims made by Sketchers included: “Shape-Ups will tone your muscles!” “They will promote healthy weight-loss and make it easier to get in shape!”

As well as the $40 million The Federal Trade Commission has also ordered Sketchers to pay full refunds to all disappointed Shape-Up customers.

Oh well, maybe we can take that extra $100 or so dollars and put it towards a gym membership?

Yet another scandal hits the fashion world as NewsLifeMedia gives Vogue Australia editor-in-chief the boot.

We audibly gasped when we heard the news that Kirstie Clements would no longer rule over Australian Vogue. We don’t know Clements, nor have we ever met her but seeing as Australian Vogue is the closest thing we have to a New Zealand Vogue we feel some kind of affection for her. 

Sacked after 13 years?! How RUDE.

As to why she was axed, we don’t know the details; the only thing we know is that NewsLifeMedia has sacked three of its senior editors including Clements.

Edwina McCann, former editor of Harpers Bazaar will be the one to replace Clements and take the reins at Vogue. We do like McCann, she definitely did good things for Harpers when she took over but she has some big heels to fill.

Is Kate finally ditching the twinsets and beginning to live up to her ‘Style Icon’ status?

We have never really been huge fans of Kate Middleton’s style (with the exception of THE dress, lets be honest, that was fantastic). The prim twin sets and demure dresses, which have deemed her a ‘style icon’, are, well rather boring.

A style icon is someone who pushes boundaries, sets trends (that have never been set before) and genuinely looks awesome 24/7.

Kate may have been responsible for the selling out of many a whistles dress but she has never been one to take a risk.

Until now?

Recently Miss Kate has been pulling it ouuut with her outfit choices. Last week she stepped out in a stunning Roland Mouret dress with a… wait for it…

SLIT-UP-TO-THERE!! Risqué!

Then, at the at Our Greatest Team Rises, a black tie gala marking the final countdown to the London 2012 Olympic Games, she made another stylish move choosing an AMAZING Jenny Packham emerald gown.

Lets hope that Middleton keeps up this new and improved sense of dress.

Firstly, when the Doodah ‘Supermodel Deck Project’ boards were released in 2010, my first thought was, “another confirmation that sex sells”, and sure, sex does sell, but having naked top-name models, such as Erin Wasson, Catherine McNeil, Abbey Lee Kershaw, and Lara Stone, on a skateboard – what a nifty concept!

The latest ‘Supermodel’ boards from Doodah also feature Arizona Muse and Freja Beha Erichsen.

In that same year, Vogue Germany featured an editorial in their July 2010 issue, presenting Keke Lindgard hanging with the boys at a skate park and looking a babe in exquisite, not to mention expensive, ensembles by the likes of top fashion houses Giorgio Armani, Hermès, Gareth Pugh, and Alexander McQueen.

Similarly, Stylestalker‘s ‘Come As You Are’ campaign was shot at a skate park, as well as the latest Sylvester by Kate Sylvester SS12/13 campaign.

Evidently, the community seems to be adopting an openness to experience to collaborating the likes of sports, art, fashion, music, and so forth. In the heart of our small Auckland town, encapsulating all these themes is Arcade, a store located on Cross Street. Run by a couple of young guys, the store operates as a creative channel for the Auckland community. Accommodating an assortment of brands from the U.S, Australia, and New Zealand, Arcade offers something for everybody, whether you’re after a new deck, shoes, apparel, or just a plain old chat. With fashion becoming more accessible and unrestricted (yes, I’m talking about androgyny), and street-style blogs being ever so popular, it’s no fascination that designers are taking their fashion to the skate parks. I mean, Avril Lavigne was definitely onto it all those years ago.

Featuring Dasha Cherkasov (Vanity Walk), the latest Sylvester by Kate Sylvester campaign is natural and nonchalant, as seen in the images shot in a skate park. Regardless of the casual feel, the collection targets an assortment of females, speaking for itself with the lush printed ensembles, peplum frills, and stripes.

A pretty girl dressed in awesome clothes and Converse sneakers, chilling at the skate park. Why the hell not?

As they keep saying, this year is flying by faster than a Kardashian wedding, and, as terrifying as this assessment is, it’s basically veritable. With the temperature finally cooling down to suit our current New Zealand Fall/Winter season, consumers in the market for winter fashion are only now purchasing coats and their winter woolies, but across the other side of the world, the inundation of Resort 2013 collections has already commenced, lead by the first show of the season, Bottega Veneta.

Featuring the ever-transeasonal monochromatic trend, the Resort ’13 collection encapsulates casual and chic to poshy and playful in womenswear; dapper and dashing to suave and sophisticated in menswear.

My personal favorites are the printed garments, both grape green and purple colored trench coats, the unicolor peach ensemble, and, need I say anything about a man in a suit?

David Beckham, Elle cover star: Coming to news stands this July, a shirtless David Beckham on the cover of a Magazine we actually want to buy. Congratulations Mr. Beckham for being ELLE magazines very first male cover star (and congratulations to the ELLE team for pulling it off).

White Jeans: Because they are no longer a Euro trash basic. White jeans are having a serious fashion revival; they are fresh, clean and you can wear basically anything with them (Just keep them slightly loose fitting and free from embellishment).

The Beautiful Mind, Molecule 02, Molecule 01

The Pheromonic effect: Because when wearing one of these fragrances you are almost guaranteed to get laid, or at least attract allot of attention, whether you want it or not.

ELLE Magazine: Because, well they are putting a shirtless David Beckham on their July cover (and the Olsens on their May cover), but also because they are one of the few ‘Fashion Bibles’ that remember that we know how to read.

Their features are lengthy, their subjects interesting and their writers full of well-timed wit.

Better value and waaaaaay chicer than staying in the hotel equivalent, these places will blow you away (they even provide you with an iPhone equipped with all the restaurants/cafes/shops that owners frequent). The only problem is I don’t think I could ever leave.

One of my favorite Australian designers is, without a doubt, the talented Alice McCall. Every season, she produces an amazing and original collection, which, evidently, makes debit surpass credit, and does no wonders to my bank account balance. For her SS12-13 collection, “Babooshka“, McCall has taken inspiration from folklore, Russian Matryoshka dolls, graceful Art Nouveau, and the ancient stained glass windows of Budapest.

Featuring feminine sheer fabrics, baroque silhouettes, beautiful floral embroideries, blossoming prints, dainty lace, and cinched waists, the overall exposition was perfection, right down to the braided hair and painted lips of the life-size Babushka dolls (read: models). Also nice to see fabulous and familiar face, Caitlin Lomax, on the runway.

Commencing Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Australia (MBFWA) 2012, Australian fashion label Romance Was Born, founded by talented designer duo Anna Plunkett and Luke Sales, blew fashionistas away with the histrionic designs presented in the label’s S/S ’13 collection.

Inspired by Marvel Comics, the stage featured a remarkable 3D Marvel-style set by paper engineer, Benja Harney, whilst the crafty collection contained numerous ostentatious bustiers, embellished ensembles, peplum waists, vibrantly-clashing colours, flamboyant prints, and theatrical silhouettes, to create a holistic comic extravaganza.

Whilst some garments may not be the most practical of sorts, it could definitely work. And hey – who wouldn’t want to feel (and look) like Wonder Woman all day, every day?
